For this reason DEDDIE has issued a special brochure that was distributed to consumers together with the electricity bill, which explains the new stricter framework and contains useful recommendations for the public. We particularly note the recommendation of DEDDIE to real estate lessors not to grant the use of the property they lease to a new tenant, i.e. not to hand over the keys to him, if he does not first, with the lease and the electronic statement, sign an electricity supply contract with any provider. The announcement is as follows:
Arbitrary intervention in elements of the electric network under the exclusive responsibility and responsibility of DEDDIE, such as meters, with the aim of altering the recording of the consumed energy or not recording it (power theft), in addition to the fact that it involves a serious risk of electric shock, it also constitutes a criminal offense that is prosecuted ex officio.
DEDDIE conducts surprise checks to detect electricity theft and may immediately cut off the electricity supply, when it detects interference dangerous to the safety of consumers and their properties, or arbitrary reconnection.
In cases of established electricity theft, the offender will be asked to pay to DEDDIE the value of the energy it consumed without being recorded by the meter, with a significantly increased price per kilowatt hour (kWh). Specifically, the calculation of the value of this energy will be based on the Administratively Determined Price of €0.15/kWh, increased by 70%, i.e. with a price of €0.255/kWh, according to the relevant decision of RAE. In addition, the offender will be asked to pay the administrative costs of DEDDIE, ranging from 300 euros to 750 euros.
In case of non-payment of the amount due within a regular period (or an installment thereof in case of settlement), DEDDIE immediately cuts off the electricity supply and the supply is not reconnected until after full payment. It may also impose restrictions on the change of user in this provision, until the settlement of the debt or the debtor’s access to the Network through another provision. so-called “energy saving” by placing various devices in the metering devices, since in these cases, the promised “saving” occurs with illegal intervention in the metering device, that is, with electrocution. In this way, they risk being accused of committing electricity theft, with the criminal consequences that it entails and being asked to pay the value of the unrecorded energy at a surcharge and at the risk of electricity interruption.
Property owners will must take care when leasing them, so that the tenant transfers the electricity supply to his name, in order not to be held accountable for any illegal acts committed by others.
Given that electricity theft is now also characterized as arbitrary reconnection to a cut off supply due to termination of the supply contract (e.g. the case where the previous tenant cut off the electricity supply by leaving the property ), landlords who rent out properties in which the electricity supply has been interrupted, should not grant their use, before the tenants enter into electricity supply contract and transfer the supply in their own name.
It is emphasized that due to the phenomenon of power theft, consistent consumers are burdened, since the increased cost of electricity in the wholesale market is passed on to them, due to power theft. In this sense, electricity theft constitutes anti-social behavior, since the “benefit” of the few translates into the loss of the many.
Along with the unwavering implementation of the new framework, DEDDIE will intensify targeted controls to identify cases of rheumatism, allocating all its resources to the fight to stop the phenomenon initially and to drastically reduce it afterwards, expecting the support and assistance of consumers.
